2024 Annual Report
A History of Heart of Scottsville
Heart of Scottsville, a nonprofit dedicated to revitalizing historic downtown Scottsville, Kentucky, was founded with the mission of fostering economic development, strengthening community engagement, and preserving the town’s heritage. As an accredited Main Street America program, Heart of Scottsville has played a pivotal role in the town’s transformation, blending historic preservation with forward-thinking initiatives that enhance quality of life for residents and visitors alike.
Founding and Early Years
The organization was established in response to the need for a structured, grassroots approach to downtown revitalization. Like many small towns across America, Scottsville had experienced economic shifts that led to vacant storefronts, struggling businesses, and a loss of communal gathering spaces. Recognizing both the challenges and opportunities, a group of dedicated community members came together to form Heart of Scottsville, aligning with the Kentucky Main Street Program to bring resources, expertise, and a vision for long-term sustainability.
From the beginning, Heart of Scottsville sought to create a welcoming and nostalgic downtown environment, leveraging the area’s historic charm while encouraging entrepreneurship and investment.
Growth and Key Milestones
Heart of Scottsville quickly became known for its ability to blend tradition with innovation. Over the years, the organization has launched signature events, community initiatives, and business support programs that have shaped the economic and cultural fabric of downtown.
Signature Events
One of the major successes of 2024 was the fourth season of the First Friday Street Fair & Car Show, a monthly event that brings the community together to celebrate local businesses, artisans, food vendors, and musicians. As the event grew in popularity, it became a catalyst for increasing foot traffic downtown, supporting local shops, and enhancing Scottsville’s reputation as a welcoming small-town destination.
The Main Street Ball, a formal fundraising event, was introduced to rally support for revitalization efforts. With its elegant setting and strong community participation, the ball has become a key source of funding, helping to sustain Heart of Scottsville’s mission.
Economic Development Initiatives
Recognizing that sustainable revitalization requires strong local businesses, Heart of Scottsville has worked to support downtown entrepreneurs. The organization has provided business grants, networking opportunities, and strategic marketing initiatives, including the Women in Business Grant, which highlights and supports female-led businesses in the community.
A major milestone came with the launch of The Fieldstore, a gift shop operated by Heart of Scottsville, which opened in October 2024. Designed as both a love letter to rural Kentucky and a fundraising tool, The Fieldstore showcases locally made goods and gifts that reflect the charm and heritage of Scottsville.
Community Engagement & Partnerships
Heart of Scottsville has cultivated strong partnerships with city and county governments, local businesses, and nonprofit organizations to further its mission. The organization played a role in humanitarian efforts, such as participating in the Scottsville Loves Erwin initiative, which provided meals and support to front-line workers and hurricane relief efforts in Erwin, Tennessee.
Looking Ahead
With a clear vision for the future, Heart of Scottsville continues to expand its impact. The organization’s strategic priorities for 2025 focus on:
• Strengthening relationships with local government to secure increased financial support.
• Expanding corporate sponsorships to grow funding for community projects.
• Enhancing its signature events and creating fresh experiences for First Fridays.
• Growing The Fieldstore into a thriving retail destination and funding source.
As it moves forward, Heart of Scottsville remains dedicated to hospitality, historic preservation, and community-driven revitalization, ensuring that downtown Scottsville remains a place where both tradition and progress thrive.
